Punjab Kings begin their campaign on a high note, but suffer opening defeat

Both Punjab Kings by Shreyas Iyer were riding high on momentum in IPL 2026. But in the highest test match score of all time, their attack was massively exposed for the first time this season and they suffered a 515-run defeat.

Batting Was Not the Problem

Punjab Kings hardly put a foot wrong with the bat. And they scored a huge 222/4 which normally prove too much to chase in T20 matches.

Marcus Stoinis played a sensational knock of 62 off just 22 balls, turning the game on its head in the dour middle overs. Prabhsimran Singh contributed too with a calm 59 off 44 balls to provide stability.

Iyer would have backed himself to defend a score like this, from a captaincy perspective. But the trouble started whenPunjab went out to bat.

Rajasthan Royals’ Fearless Chase

The chase was on for Rajasthan Royals from the word go. They started off well with Yashasvi Jaiswal smashing a 51 from 27 balls and putting the Punjab bowlers under pressure early on.

Punjab never really turned the tide back in their favour, as RR kept on piling runs at a healthy rate throughout the innings.

Middle Overs Resistance Was Not Enough

Punjab Kings did get a hint of a revival, courtesy Yuzvendra Chahal. He bowled an excellent spell of 3/36, which created a little pressure and hope.

Nevertheless, other bowlers did not support him and that went in vain. Rajasthan references boundaries and kept acceptable run rate coming down.

Death Bowling — The Core Reason of Defeat

Usually reliable Arshdeep Singh had an expensive day out. He leaked 68 runs in his 4 overs, and Rajasthan took complete advantage of it to score at an absolute merry pace during the business end of the innings.

Even a big total of 222 were not enough to defend for Punjab as they bowled many loose deliveries, yorkers and lines.

Finishing Touch by Rajasthan Royals

Donovan Ferreira dispatched an explosive 52 off 26 balls to help finish what Mills had started. Keeping their nerves intact, Rajasthan Royals successfully chased down the target in 19.2 overs.

And therefore, doing it under pressure and gaming plans better than Punjab is what made the difference in both games.

The Bottom Line Conclusion: Where Iyer Went Wrong

This loss would act as a sort of awakening for Iyer and his side who will aim to get back stronger in their next IPL 2026 matches.
